Gurpreet’s Film Review On Panjabi Film “Sajna Ve Sajna”

Well the film opens with a brilliant scene from Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. The film is about a muslim family in pakistan, grandmother (Fatima), grandson (Jibran), and grandaughter who adopted an orphan child, of a Sikh family, Manpreet, but raised her like their own daughter. Despite them being Muslims and Manpreet being Sikh they didn’t let Manpreet lose her faith, beliefs and religion. One day a letter comes from “Ajit Singh”, who was meant to be Manpreets father in law as the grandmother who adopted her, Fatima, had given Manpreets alliance to Ajit Singhs son, however in the letter Ajit writes and explains that he doesnt want the alliance to go ahead as he beleives that his son isnt good enough for Manpreet because she is educated girl and his son is uneducated. So the grandma is upset and angry at the fact that Ajit Singh broke the alliance and gave a silly excuse. Manpreet explains how neither did the grandmother break the alliance, neither did she break the alliance but neither did ajit singh break the alliance, it was all God’s way of showing that if he broke this alliance he has also fixed another alliance else where.

…In UK is Kartar Singh, Kartar Singh was Fatima’s husbands best freind. Kartar Singhs family in the UK consists of his widow daughter in law, grandson(Bally) and grand daughter. Kartar Singh is a traditional Sikh who values his beliefs and culture, however still is quite laid back.

Bally asks Kartar Singh what if he marries a white girl and what is the big deal? Kartar Singh says: its not the fact of big deal or small deal, Gods made everyone, but if you get married to a white girl your kids will not have their mother tongue of panjabi.

One day bally had to drive to a music event in which he was performing and has an accident on the way. He gets rushed into hospital where his operation is being carried out and doctor tells them that Bally is in coma. Hearing the news Kartar Singh decides to go to Nankana Sahib to pray for Bally’s life.

Jibran meets Kartar Singh at the airport searching for passenger’s and finds Kartar Singh. They have no idea of who each other are until Kartar Singh explains to him where exactly he wants to go (Jibrans place). Jibran gets happy and tells him to sit in the car he knows the exact place and reveals to him that he knows he is Kartar Singh.

Kartar Singh comes to Lahore Pakistan to Jibrans house and has memories of his past in the house. Following day Kartar Singh overhears Jibran talking about what Fatima had said over the money in the bank which belongs to Kartar Singh and touching it would be “Haraam” which is the reason why he don’t even want to think about taking it.

Manpreet and Kartar Singh go to Nankana Sahib and spend entire days praying and carrying out Seva at the Gurdwara Sahib for his grandsons life. (BEAUTIFUL SCENE). Back in UK Bally is out of coma and Bally’s mum rings Kartar Singh and tells him the good news that Bally is out of coma, and thanks God. So off he goes back to UK. Before going Jibran gives all the money that belongs to Kartar Singh back to him. But seeing as Kartar Singh heard everything he gives it too Jibran and tells him to keep it as a gift.

Manpreet is also accompanying Kartar Singh going back to the UK. Kartar Singh and Manpreet reach the airport, where Kartar Singh introduces Manpreet to the family. Bally and Manpreet get introduced after Bally is given permission to go home. Manpreet takes care of the house, helps around and takes care of Bally at the same time. Bally’s mum watches Manpreet and Bally together and starts to get ideas of their marriage. She talks to Kartar Singh about both Bally’s and Manpreet’s alliance. Manpreet overhears and gets extremely happy.

Fatima rings Kartar Singh to ask whether everything is okay. Kartar Singh reveals to her that he would like Manpreet’s hand in marriage for Bally. Fatima is really happy and agrees. It’s Bally’s birthday and Charlene expresses herself to Bally and tells him that she is ready to get married to him. On the other hand Kartar Singh reveals to everyone that he is getting Bally and Manpreet engaged on the same day too. Bally gets angry and says to Kartar Singh he dont want to get married to an “illiterate” girl. Manpreet gets upset over hearing this and Bally walks away, Kartar Singh has a minor heart attack.

Bally cries and apologises, Kartar Singh reveals how bally made him feel ashamed for the first time infront of everyone. He says he just wants to see Bally get married and settle down. He asks Bally if he has anyone in mind. Bally is quiet at this stage and lies to Kartar Singh tellimg him “I’ll do whatever you tell me to do”.

Bally apologises to Manpreet. Manpreet explains the differences between arranged and love marriages since Bally thinks how can you have an aranged marriage. Manpreet shows the differences that majority of the marriages that break up are the love marriages, and if you have an arranged marriage you know you have your elders there behind you, and explains to Bally that she isnt upset about anything. Manpreet shows difference of him being educated in top University in UK and her just educated in an ordinary village school. She reminds Bally that if God has writen his name in her life then no force in the world will be able to get rid of it.

Manpreet realises that something is upsetting Bally so she askes him to tell her. Bally reveals that he is in love with Charlene. Manpreet is shocked but she asks what if you both get married? Bally explains that he is worried at what Kartar Singh will say, but she tells him not to worry and promises him that she will make Kartar Singh happy for the marriage before she goes back to Pakistan.

Manpreet meets Charlene and realises that she wants to marry Bally too. Manpreet makes Charlene promise to remain faithful to each other throughtout their life. Manpreet then teaches Charlene Panjabi culture, traditions which soon enough she forms Charlene into a “Panjaban” - Charlene at this point is looking outstanding. The dress codes, cooking, speaking etc… Charlene gets overwhelmed with the Panjabi culture and is happy that Manpreet taught her it all.

Bally explains he dont understand Manpreet despite being hurt she still is trying to get him and Charlene married, Manpreet says what is the big thing in that I’m helping a freind get his love, and he responds saying well you might not see it as a big thing but i do.

Charlene realises that Manpreet has feelings for Bally but isn’t revealing them. She remebers to what her dad had said to her previousky that you can where a Panjabi dress but it wont make you a Panjabi women. Giving an example of Bally’s mum who become a widow at a young age, but she didn’t re marry for the sake of her kids. Charlenes dad says only a Panjabi women can make such a sacrifice and asked Charlene that could she have done that?

Charlene wants to speak to Bally, but in Bally’s house his mum finds out the truth that he doesnt want to marry Manpreet but wants to marry Charlene instead. She is shocked at seeing that Bally had the nerves to lie to his grandfather. She and Kartar Singh confront Bally. Bally agrees that he lied but it was due to the circumstances at that time. Kartar Singh is disgusted at him lying but then agrees for him to go and marry Charlene. Manpreet is in the kitchen listening to everything, she is upset but keeps it in her. She congratulates Bally and tells him that she is happy God made her fulfill her promise and now she can go. Manpreet tells Bally to get Charlene.

Bally goes into deep thinking on the way to get Charlene and realises that he is in love with Manpreet and not Charlene. Bally tells Charlene that he can’t marry her. Charlene is OK about the fact because she realises Manpreet loves him more than she does and Charlene is extremely happy for them both. She tells Bally that they will be freinds forever.

Bally comes back home to tell everyone that he wants to marry Manpreet but finds out that everyone have gone to drop Manpreet off to the airport. He drives as fast as he can but once he reaches it’s too late, Kartar Singh said you cant do anything about it anymore all doors have been closed. Bally recalls on what Kartar Singh always had said, that if all doors are closed one door that will definately be open no matter what situation is God’s. They go to the Gurdwara and while coming out Bally see’s a whole crowd of his freinds all dressed up wondering what is going on, behind comes Manpreet dressed in bridal attire. Charlene and Ballys freind (Shaurat - who treated Manpreet as a sister) called back Manpreet.

The film ends with Bally proposing to Manpreet infront of everyone.

Overall the film is fantastic, mixture of comedy, culture, emotions, religion, faith and is extremely worthwhile watching.
